Leaving for Japan
We're finally shaking the dust off and getting out of India. Assuming Air India hasn't gone bankrupt or on strike, we'll be on flight AI111 from Kolkata to New Delhi, arriving 12h40 local time (03h10 EDT) and flight AI314 from New Delhi to Osaka, arriving 12h50 local time (23h50 EDT).

In which I discover Kolkata to be the most disgusting place on earth; I begin to think I won't survive to leave India; Sheryl loses her camera
We'd heard a few stories from travellers about Kolkata (Calcutta that was). Some of them, surprisingly, said they loved the place. But if I had only one word to describe Kolkata, it would be vile. The place stinks. The air is filled with an indescribable disgusting funk, different from anywhere
